Peter Gelderloos, author of How Nonviolence Protects the State, received permission from a Spanish judge, to leave the country for two weeks for a book tour in the United Kingdom. During a stop in Liverpool, Gelderloos delivered a 40-minute presentation in which he explained “the state itself is violence, both physical and mental, against everyone it governs.”
His book tour is scheduled to take him to Newcastle on Jan. 29, Leeds on Jan. 31, and Brighton on Feb. 1. He is scheduled to return to Spain on Feb. 4. The conditions of Gelderloos’ bail require him to check in with a Spanish court every two weeks until his trial which could take up to two years.
On April 23, 2007, Gelderloos was arrested by Spanish police at a demonstration in Barcelona. “Peter was acting as a witness for the arrest of Xavier Mazas, when he was detained by police under suspicion of setting off a petardo--a firework used to scatter flyers into the air,” according to a post on Gelderloos’ MySpace page. “Police accused Peter of being a ‘terrorist’ and the two are being charged with illegal demonstration and public disorder, the latter carrying a prison sentence of between six and three years because it was allegedly committed with explosives.”
