The Court Historian and the Unbearable Facts of History
Dear “Abu Spinoza”
Thanks for putting the record straight re the war in Afghanistan and the demands made by the Taliban regarding Osama bin Laden. And as far as the ‘Court Historian’ I found it hard to read his NYROB piece to the end. I mean — he actually attributed ‘leadership’ to GWB because he was in the habit of sweeping objections aside.
Thanks again for a very informative piece,
Helga F.
President Schwarzenegger
Mark, the American people want a Kennedy or what they thought a Kennedy would stand for? Someone married to an ersatz fascist may be a Kennedy by name but certainly not by spirit. Let’s hope she does have the spirit in her and can out-influence the real fascists. Right. Why doesn’t she leave him? She’d have plenty of money.

Not in anyone’s wildest dreams will the Constitution be changed to allow a naturalized citizen to run for and be elected President of the United States. That is, not until Hispanic speaking people become the majority in the country, which should be in 20 years or so. Come to think about it, our elected leaders pay little attention to formal documents such as the Constitution or Declaration of Independence, so maybe they think it doesn’t matter how we change them. In any event, Arnold will be blamed for everything that happens in California after a 90-day honeymoon, including the state slipping into the Pacific Ocean. And to think, I once lived in the Bear state and liked it at the time - but that was from 1968 to 1972. And I’m darn lucky to remember. Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end - so say Archie and Edith.

Just read your article on the Counterpunch website touting Arnold Schwarzenegger for President in 2008. Surely this is a “tongue-in-cheek” article! If you are seriously suggesting the Mr. Schwarzenegger is at all qualified to be President (or even Governor of California), then I feel very sorry for you and for this country.
If you are serious, PLEASE email me back with what you think Arnold’s qualifications are. At this point all I see is a not very talented actor who likes to grope women and admires Hitler (And I didn’t get this information from TV - I never watch it. Rather, I read some the co-opted, cowardly mainstream print media and much alternative media such as Counterpunch.) The only reason he was elected Governor is because 90% of the American people have given up any kind of critical and independent thinking. Hopefully, Congress will not tamper with the Constitution and Arnold will not be able to run.
Are you not feeling well or is this all a joke?!
Sincerely,
Barbara K.
Mark Hand reponds: I think I was feeling well when I wrote this piece. And, no, it was not meant as a joke. I predict the movement to allow foreign-born citizens to become president will gain momentum in G.W. Bush’s second term, as Republicans recognize Schwarzenegger’s popularity among large numbers of Democrats. This ability to attract Democrats, as he did during the California recall election, would almost guarantee him a victory in 2008.
