Re: From Z Magazine to Mickey Z.

I read your comments about Z on your website. Sorry you’re unhappy, although publicly attacking Z seems hardly worth your time and effort. Perhaps a phone call? I just found this message today, by the way—it must have gotten deleted with the 500 Viagra ads that come in daily.

Anyway, it’s upsetting to read something that suggests we don’t pay people, since we pay everybody who contributes to Z (who has a mailing address we can find)—and have done so for the last 16 years. It would be nice if you retracted those comments from your article.

As to your not being contacted, with a staff of one, now two, it is hard to get to everybody. Sorry about that. We are trying to improve the situation but ... for the July/August issue alone we were reviewing over 500 articles and those people have to be contacted as well and we went on vacation and the printer messed up the first printing and we made them reprint the entire issue...etc.

Signed, Lydia Sargent, Z Magazine

Mark Hand responds: Lydia Sargent has informed me that checks for contributors are cut the month after the month on the issue. For the July/August issue they come in early September. In my article, I said that I hadn’t heard from Z about whether I would be paid. I also said that whether or not I got paid for the Mickey Z. book review was not an issue for me. I did not say that Z doesn’t pay contributors. I also said that I was grateful Z published the review.

Re: The New York Times, Misleading Headlines and Cameraman Mazen Dana

Once more Abu Spinoza does the necessary work of UNdegrading the discourse of the NYT. I hope his work is widely circulated with copies to the NYT. Once the NYT gets enough demands for adherence to elementary standards of honesty, it will reform. It is, after all, a market-driven business. Even the NYT is capable of honesty, but only after honesty is demanded by enough alert folks who follow the lead of Abu Spinoza.

Loved your bumper sticker collection! Here’s one more:
