Ranking Republican Commends Army Officer

December 1, 2003

Senator John W. Warner (R-VA)
US Senate
225 Russell Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator Warner:

I read with shock in the Washington Post (November 30, 2003, Sunday, “Army Officer’s Actions Raise Ethical Issues”) that you have joined the coterie of politicians who believe that Lt. Colonel Allen B. West should be “commended for his actions and interrogation.” Lt. Colonel Allen West fired his pistol near the head of an Iraqi detainee and allowed U.S. soldiers to beat that detainee in an attempt to get him to reveal information about the Iraqi resistance. I hope that you realize that beating detainees constitute grave violations of law and are worthy of regimes that one would prefer not to remember.

Please note that I shall post this letter and your reply, if any, on www.pressaction.com, a website edited by my colleague Mr. Mark Hand, and published from Arlington, Virginia. I believe that it is widely read by residents in the state of Virginia and elsewhere.

Sincerely,

A Constituent
