'His Majesty's Royal Jester'
Dear Helga,
You are not alone in finding it hard to read Arthur Schlesinger Jr.’s article, Eyeless in Iraq, to the end. Only Schlesinger could actually write:
“He is a president who exults in big ideas. …. I suspect that he dreams of making his place in history by converting the Arab world to representative democracy.”
Perhaps Schlesinger ought to change his job title. “His Majesty’s Royal Jester” rather than “the US Court Historian” may be a better description of his service to power. To history buffs that may seem unfair since Royal Jesters often do tell the truth and express public grievances in clever and subtle ways.
