The Return of Factsheet 5
Announcement: Writers, reviewers and contributors needed for magazine on zine culture and independent media
Factsheet 5 - Your Guide to Zines and Independent Media
Factsheet 5 has been keeping the world up to date on the zine and independent publishing community since the 1980s. Started back in a small town in New York State during the 1980s, it moved to San Francisco in the 1990s and established itself as the definitive guide to the zine revolution. Factsheet 5 halted publication in 1998 and a great resource for independent publishing was gone. However, Factsheet 5 plans to begin publishing again in 2005.
The Factsheet 5 website (http://www.factsheet5.org) will be updated with the latest information about the relaunch. Factsheet 5 also invites you to stay up to date regarding the latest news, information, and announcements by signing up for the Factsheet5-News email list
(http://lists.mutualaid.org/mailman/listinfo/factsheet5-news).
Factsheet 5 will continue to cover the world of zines and independent media. Each issue will be packed with hundreds of reviews of independent publications, music and spoken word CDs, books, video/DVDs, blogs, and website reviews. Additionally, it will include informative articles on zine culture, independent publishing, lively columns, interviews with self-publishers, scene reports, and an extensive news section.
Factsheet 5 is looking for writers, reviewers, graphic artists and comic artists to contribute regularly to the magazine. We are also looking for a core group of contributing editors to assist with some of the day to day operations including coordinating all aspects of the publication from the planning stages to final product. This will include the layout/design of the publication, coordinating print and distribution, updating and maintaining the subscription database, filling orders, soliciting advertising (primarily from indie publications, distros, punk/indie music labels), proofreading, reviewing freelance submissions/interviews and participating in a process to help determine the content of each issue. In addition, we are searching for someone proficient in web skills to help redesign and regularly update the Factsheet 5 website.
The type of content we are looking for will include feature articles and interviews relevant to the zine and independent publishing community. We are also looking for regular scene reports from cities and towns all over North America and the world covering the independent media in your particular community. Coverage can include zines, pirate/micro radio, community/independent radio stations or programs, cable access television, community newspapers, infoshops, radical book and record stores, distributors, and other items that might be of interest to the independent publishing community. Photographs and graphics highly encouraged for articles, interviews and scene reports.
Most importantly, we need lots of reviewers willing to write reviews of zines, independent magazines, music and spoken word CDs, video/DVD films and documentaries, books, and even blog and website reviews.
Factsheet 5 will be a nationally-distributed magazine published bi-monthly (6 times/year) with a projected print run of at least 10,000+ copies. Interested individuals who wish to contribute to Factsheet 5 are encouraged to contact us at factsheet5@comcast.net. Freelance submissions can be sent directly to us by email or regular snail mail to:
