  1. The whole Iraqi misadventure has been a shambles.  However you seem to have overlooked that the Security Council has recognised that the occupation has come to an end, and that a national government is now in place.  If you are relying upon international law you need to acknowledge that Coalition forces are in Iraq with the consent of the national government - however politically diagreeable this may be to many of us.  Or are you asserting that Chapter VII Security Council resolutions are not binding and cannot bring about a formal end to occupation.

  2. On comment above: ‘Coalition forces are in Iraq with the consent of the national government’ Laughable! Who created this ‘national government’? Ben, boy, you’ve got the chicken before its egg.

As to article...Magnificent! This is a cause worth fighting for. SIR: Support the Iraqi Resistance.  How about rallying round this post? A hundred comments at least…

Imagine the outrage among the far right in US politics [ which is no longer right but centre stage].

Kerry uses ‘terrorists & extremists” to describe the Iraqi resistance.  That’s what we’re up against.

Abu Spinoza makes the extremely important point that criticising Arab/Muslim beliefs has no part on the radical left. People in glass houses…

The West brings ‘freedom & democracy’. Bullshit. More like rampant individualism & capitalist ideology.

Imagine 100,000 people marching on Washington in support of the Iraqi resistance.  A treasonable offence? Could we be arrested for even thinking about it?

Could anti-war protestors be persuaded to march for this cause? Probably not. Too revolutionary for limp liberals & the soft left.

  3. If things in Iraq ever calm down, the West will bring the wonders of World Bank and IMF reforms, the final death blows to a civilization…

  4. The World Bank and the IMF are already very much involved in Iraq.  For the World Bank’s role, see here:

and for the IMF’s role see here:

The international financial institutions’ role in the country depends on what the power countries, particularly the U.S. but also other rich countries (EU states and Japan) want to do.  Suffice to say international financial instutions represent the interests of Treasury/Wall Street complex rather than anything else.

Iraq is a resource rich country, which if it were not for the wars, the decades of sanctions, and the current occupation, would be in a position to assist other countries, rather than rely on the international financial institutions and foreign aid.

The present occupation of Iraq provides a lucrative opportunity for U.S. and western companies to profit with the help of a few local collaborators.
