    I’d normally consider a remark like this to be a reflection on the disgusting character and vileness of its author, but I’m prepared to make an exception in Smith’s case on grounds of his previous record. In his peerlessly clueless encomium to Noam Chomsky on this site on 22 March he confidently asserted that the US had given a $43 million grant to the Taliban - a prime example of an ignoramus gullibly retailing whatever he stumbles across on the Internet without troubling to check it. Amazingly, on being called on this howler he at first tried to brazen it out and then fell suddenly silent. A genuine historian would have checked his sources and on making a mistake would publish a retraction - but not Smith, who is incompetent and very, very stupid.

    And that’s the best excuse for him I can come up with. It certainly fits all the available data.
