  1. Dear Eric,

thanks for this piece.  I am of German origin but am an Australian citizen now.  Obviously the holocaust is at the root of all that is going on between Israel and the Palestinians, so Germans are somewhat reluctant to comment.  Still ... Israel’s actions should not be beyond criticism.  After all, it has ignored any number of UN resolutions.

    Thanks again,

  2. With all due respect to Helga, is no one out there going to comment on her “tame” language here?  Is criticism all Israel deserves? I will not comment any further on comments on this article, but, in closing, I would just like to add that THIS --Eric’s dilemma-- is what I’m talking about when I say that we need a new paradigm for protest.  We cannot afford to have our gems hauled off to prison so easily. Take risks differently while “confronting” in the future, please.  Best, Ox

  3. Dear Helga,

To say that the Israeli genocide of the Palestinians is totally rooted in the Nazi holocaust against the Jews (and many others in WWII), is painting with broad strokes on a small canvas.

Please read the amazing and wonderful book by Israel Shahak (who survived the Warsaw Ghetto and concentration camps, and lived his life out in Israel) Jewish History, Jewish Religion (Pluto, 2001). Shahak offers a much more objective reading of history as it concerns the Jews and issues of “anti- Semitism” or the Middle East than we get from mainstream (or most Left) media sources.

For example, he would immediately refute your argument based simply on the principle that two wrongs do not make a right.  Using the Jewish holocaust as an excuse to expand territory throughout the Middle East is immoral, and logically absurd, unless you understand the deep religious roots of such an ideology, and I am not talking only about zionism. Shahak will supply that understanding.
