  1. I agree with many of your points, but I wanted to complain about one:  I keep hearing about how U.S. sactions killed 500,000 to 1,000,000 people in Iraq.

    Here’s my understanding of this:

    (a) The sanctions were not merely US sanctions.  The sanctions were authorized by the UN, and pretty much every country except Syria participated.

    (2) The “Oil for Food” program would have allowed Iraq to sell oil and buy food and medicine.  Iraq opted not to do so.  As I see it, this makes Saddam Hussein directly responsible.  One can certainly argue that the sanctions themselves were wrong.  Even so, there was no need for them to be deadly.  Saddam Hussein made them deadly.

    (3) I don’t believe the numbers.  I think they are wildly exaggerated.  The numbers vary by hundreds of thousands, depending on who you ask.  Generally, the more “progressive” the group, the higher the number they claim have died.

  2. Andrew...It seems to me that the exact number of slaughtered civilians is not the issue. The important thing for me is that the USA committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Iraq.

Also, it is well known that the UN is manipulated by the USA. The Security Council should be eliminated and the processes should be made more democratic and fair to all countries.

Under international law Saddam Hussein is still president of Iraq and the USA is an illegal occupying power. The USA should immediately leave Iraq and pay reparations to the people there. Nuremberg style trials should be held for those responsible for the war crimes.
