Appeasement: We Follow Orders, Why Don't You?

Where does one become a terrorist? I want to sign up. Are there summer camps? Does one need a GED to sign up? Will Al-Qaeda pay for college?
Mark, very appropriate photo.
Imagine future generations and the photos that will link virtually every aspect of culture to Bush with a friendly hand hake. I’m thinking here, mainly, of professional athletes and the Dalai Lama.

Peace. Derivatives of Latin pax or its Old French descendant to reach English include...appease, pracific, pacify...and pay. I’d say it’s time to actively work against The American Machine in a very serious way. Kap’s humor is mucho fun, but I think the challenge will be more mundane...requiring each and every one of us to call a spade a spade with our neighbors and family members and friends and colleagues. And, then, go that route with or without others --in or out of the limelight-- that is required...to affect change in these parts. To isolate who exactly is working against our mutual interests, and go beyond words in expressing our dissatisfaction. On some level that’s going to be extremely harsh, and I hope that all readers will take several serious moments before launching out onto frighteningly new ground...where academic discussions of “appeasement” (a topic that’s sure to be the rage, taking up endless talk shows and coffee klatch time)have no place. That said, I applaud this particular piece and its author. Blessings in solidarity, Richard Oxman

Micah-- Thanks for exposing the double standards of the war party and its followers in the United States. Your ability to attack this unsavory segment of the U.S. population with disarming humor and such precision is much appreciated. --Emile

Great, links-heavy piece Micah. I thought the comparison to Reagan’s election in 1980 was particularly cogent.

You certainly have a point over the overuse of “appeasement”. HOWEVER there remains a concern not over those who say “there is no point to spanish troups being in iraq (which might be true) but instead when people say “311” occured (or even terrorism in general) because spanish troups are in iraq therefore we should withdraw.
The latter is appeasement and is flawed on the same lines that chamberlin’s appeasement was flawed.Posted by scottie from on 03/19 at 04:14 PM -
scottie,
As for the specifics of Spain, I believe it is fairly well established that the vast majority of the population in that country was against the invasion and occupation of Iraq before March 11. If a person has this position, seeing that the I&O will lead, or at least could have lead, to more terrorism is simply another reason to oppose the I&O.
