Great article. It reflects my thougts too. The whole bunch of them, Congress especially, should be tried for war crimes. Impeachment is too good for them.

Agreed. Especially Finestein. She voted for the heinous repeal of AFDC. Money that could have gone to families went to killing Iraqi children in the form of santions and in the form of the illegal invasion and aggression. It is unfortunate that Cindy Sheehan withdrew her challenge of Finestein. But I hope that Todd Chretian (sp?) run a tough race against Finestein and exposes her duplicity and complicity

I disagree about something, Josh.
“And that’s why the Dems are just as culpable in all that has transpired since Bush took office in 2000. They aren’t just a part of the problem—the Democrats are the problem.”
The Democrats should definitely be seen as part of a problem. The Dem/Rep synergy should not be oversimplified, even if it’s not the most complex thing in the world. That is to say, they (the Dems and Reps) are not exactly the same. There are, for example, some antiwar elements in the Democratic Party. That said, I can actually, mostly agree with a line by MC Paul Barman:
“Republicrats!
They take half a step forward, and then they double back!
They speak with a gay lilt
They tilted their grey kilt
Spilled on the AIDS quilts
With the dregs of a keg
plus eggy smeg all down their legYOU MAKE MY KARMA PUKE!
YOU WHO REFUSE TO DISARM A NUKE!”But that’s beside the point here.
Republicrats are surely part of America’s political reality.
Still, I am under the impression that the progressives you talk about getting all “fired up” are the “progressive Democrat” faction (The Nation, Kucinich, and all of that). I’d even say that almost all progressives and radicals share some political goals. No?
So I’ve some questions for everybody here (and, in responding, I promise to be on my very best behaviour):
1. Is there a progressive/radical rift?
2. If so, does it ideologically echo the UFPJ/A.N.S.W.E.R. split in the American antiwar movement?
3. Can all these people sit down for some hot cocoa and talk about getting along?
4. Is it impossible for the progressives and the radicals to agree it’s desirable to oust not only the neoconservative insaniacs, but also their Republicrat enablers and facilitators?
I know this conversation happens often enough, but it’s the sort of thing that’s good to keep talking about.
Anyway, on a personal note, I am getting ready leave this technocivilized hell-hole of apartment blocks and teevee to move out into the wilderness, where I will read, write and learn to use solar power.
