Wonderful, Kim. Sad...but many thanks for your treatment here. A little side note: I had contact with John Carlos...who was supposed to be highlighted at OneDance back in January (thanks to a sweet interview by Dave Zirin in Z Magazine around that time). He assured me that he had suffered...and was continuing to suffer...over three decades...from the backlash on him...respecting what he did (represented in the photo/stamp image at the head of your piece); that suffering included the suicide of his wife...so long ago...that he attributed to the backlash. Don’t know enough details about Tommie Smith, but...judging by what Cynthia McKinney suggested...I’d say his blows were comparable. So horrible that the image can be co-opted the way it has been, yes? The very best in solidarity, Oxie P.S. Our team at that time was considering doing exactly what your “refusenik” did.

Haven’t watched more than a few minutes of the big spectacle in Greece...but it made me smile every time a favored American was humbled. Nothing personal against individual athletes (well maybe a few of them)...but I usually prefer underdogs (except the Yankees).
Nice article, Kim.
