Quotes from my dictionary- “Politician - someone active or skilled in public or governmental affairs...especially suggests ability to deal with people and accomplish things for the good of the people and the country, but in America often used slightingly or comtemptuously to suggest a man without principles scheming for his own or his party’s good.”
“Politic - wise in looking out for one’s own interests.”
I’ve known some really fine people who have served in government office and there isn’t a one of them who didn’t have to “compromise” on some issues in order to get other issues of more importance to them resolved. According to one’s personal sense of integrity, some people, such as yourself or Nader, speak boldly from outside office, and don’t get in office;some
“compromise”, speak what people want to hear ("hope"and “good news"),or trash their opponent, get in office and then work on their issues.
Yes - things are a real mess in this country and around the world. It takes a real idealist(or fool or egomaniac) to even run for the office of President of the United States. But, I don’t think Bush or Kerry are primarily politicians or politic(in the contemptuous sense). I think they think they can effect the world for the better. God help the winner. It will take the wisdom of Solomon to live with the realities you list and yet have the hope and idealism that the many challenges ahead of them can be met.MomPosted by Pat Beckman from Fargo, North Dakota on 09/30 at 01:38 PM
