  1. I’m ecstatic. An op to comment on The Hawk.  My dad took me to Gavilan’s training camp when I was twelve years old before he
“lost"to Johnny Saxon-- and, as per the quote provided at the top of a recent piece of mine...some contact was maintained for a number of years.  I’m looking at the photo he signed for me right at this moment...and it’s 10/10/54...the 10/10 being my daughter’s birthday!  Gallo’s right on at least one point for sure --although the thrust of what Mick’s suggesting is right on--...the confiscation of the white horse he was riding when I sawhim.
    Go Bolo, Oxo

  2. If you can figure out how to write a book without using any trees, Ox, you really should share your life story. The connections and intersections are remarkable.

  3. I don’t have to figure that out ‘cause --as per my recent article-- it’s already been figured out by North Point Press...that’s put out the McDonough (and what’s his name, the other guy?) book, CRADLE TO CRADLE.  And speaking of connections and intersections...I met someone who knows McDonough --if that’s not exactly his name, it’s in the article-- and, hopefully, will be getting back...as per his promise in the Los Gatos park where we met a few Sundays ago.  Something’s meant to be, obviously.  But...I can tell you that it’s probably not...the telling of my personal story.  If we can get something going to take over the airways nationally...as per my article...perhaps I’ll change my mind on that point; first things first.  Love, Rich

  4. I’m a Kid Gavilan fan too. Mickey and I are interviewed in the same issue of Australia’s Vegan Voice. Ox and I were on a radio show together. And we all write for Press Action. That’s too many coincidences. I suspect a vast left hook conspiracy.

  5. I pray that pattrice will make an entry under my recent Pilger/Zinn piece; I’m at library again...and at a loss to find your email, P. Had intended to contact you as per the above.  So much to share re Gavilan down the road.  Looking for other photos tonight, ox ps also would like pattrice feedback on the TERRORISTS piece posted earlier.  Incredible work on that Monkeywrench thang, P.  We sd have talked about The Kid that night on the radio show!

  6. Two additions:

Firstly, I was wrong: The Cuban Hawk was knocked down once...by Carmen Basilio in a World Welterweight title bout at the War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse, NY on Sept. 18, 1953. He was floored in the second round but got up to score a unanimous decision.

Secondly, a friend suggested that Gavilan’s lack of support in the U.S. might have been partially due to his “blackness.” The Miami anti-Castro Cuban community is more “white” and thus did not view El Keed as a hero. Sounds feasible to me…

  7. Just a quick response...w more to follow...ASAP...if time permits.  My fogged mind tells me that Saxon was from Philly...and that that “loss” to Johnny Saxon...shortly after I met him...costing him so much...was highly questionable...highly booooooooed, as I remember...and that THAT and the like might have played a part in the Kid’s bristling at the U.S., among other things.  Alzheimerly yours, Rich

  8. Forget to note that the fight, I believe, was IN Philadelphia w Saxon.  Left jab, Ox

  9. The Kid lost the welterweight belt to Johnny Saxtonon Oct. 20, 1954 at the Convention Hall in Philly. It was a unanimous decision (scoring in rounds: 9-6, 7-6-2, 8-6-1) but 20 of 22 ringside reporters thought Gavilan won.

  10. Saxton, not Saxtonon, oui?

Posted by Oxboxer from  on  08/10  at  02:31 AM
  11. Yeah...a typo. Should have read: “to Johnny Saxton on Oct. 20”

  12. For activists interested in SPECIFIC PLANS that can’t be easily undermined by the gov’t...and that hold enormous potential for educating the public: Know that I just emailed Dave Zirin --who seems to specializing in making the “dissenting views” of sports figures public--asking that he help me get the pros he’s had contact with (Carolos Delgado, John Carlos, Carl Eller et. al.) TOGETHER...for some kind of movement in solidarity...in public.  See Zirin’s take on the award show in which the former Purple People Eater took part yesterday...on Counterpunch today.  Once again, Mickey Z has inspired me --with this Gavilan article-- to jump outside of the box...and get something done.  If it works, perhaps we’ll call The Group..."I Kid You Not” or “Galavanting Gallivans” or something that acknowledges The Hawk’s disenchantment w The Powers in this country.  I’ll keep you posted, if you like.  Out of the box Ox.  ps you too, reading public, can come up w stuff that should sidestep the usual limitations respecting...educating the public.  Make a huge dent in the Sports World --not just having a “rogue” bit of coverage here and there-- and we’ll have taken a huge step for Extreme Mankind.
