  1. Excellent piece!

That said, I expect that if much more of this goes that the calls for a more brutal use of force will increase in the United States.

  3. It is amazing for the world to actually remember that the United States is a country that helps all, protects all and provides support to most developing nations without question or hand out for returns.  Being the charity of the world has its price, but when is the price too high?

We americans love humanity and we will help when asked and respond when necessary.  But the world should at least say thank you.

  4. If Deborah wants documentation to the contrary, I’d be glad to provide it. Ox P.S.  I should think regular readers of Press Action would already have that under their belts.

  5. A very powerful piece. I have a hard time responding to it. I am so deeply grieved by all the horrors of wars. And all of mans’ inhumanities to one another. Yes, the U.S. and others should leave Iraq and everywhere else we have no business being. I imagine the American Indians felt the same way when the Anglos set foot on their land here. Nothing has changed much. Only the weapons used. We do need to challenge the duopoly of our present political system. Thank you for your strong article.

  6. Everyone interested in this piece should read BOTH of Robert Fisk’s pieces on ZNet, posted today.  Best, Ox

  7. The contractors who were killed were not “civilians,” as being touted in the headlines of the corporate press, but mercaneries who went to Iraq to support an illegal occupation and make a fast buck for themseleves.  That said, the crowd’s actions were deplorable.  The bodies of mercaneries deserve proper burial.

Yet, Anglo-American occupiers have shown little respect for the lives of Iraqi civilians and Iraqi soldiers.  Surely the primary responsibility for stopping the cycle of violence and needless deaths lies with the stronger party.

  8. What a silly, biased, one sided, illogical rant!

Saddam caused Iraq’s problems by invading Kuwait without reason.  The U.S. and other did the right thing in evicting him.

As part of the ceasefire, Saddam agreed to disarm and to have inspectors supervise the disarmament.  ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS COOPERATE!  The sanctions could have ended a decade ago.  There would have been no invasion.  But he didn’t do it.  At the same time he was telling the UN that all his weapons were gone, he was threatening both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and announcing his missiles would burn Tel Aviv.  So he was either lying about the missiles or lying to the UN.

Everyone, even Hans Blix, even the French and German governments, agreed that Iraq had not complied with the cease fire terms or repeated Security Council resolutions.  Saddam brought this on himself and his country.

The main reason the Arab world is in such decline is their inability to see the truth.  All their failings and setbacks are blamed on America, the West, Israel, the Jews, etc.  It’s almost pointless to argue with them.  It’s easier to just watch them continue to rant and to fail in all their endeavors and blame everyone else.

  9. Andrew,

I don’t feel like bothering with your contradictory assertions and such, but, as I noted at http://mth.blogspot.com/2003_05_01_mth_archive.html#94083651, the administrations of both H.W. Bush and Clinton made it clear that they would see that the Sec Coun. maintained sanctions on Iraq so long as Saddam was in power.

  10. Documentation is available for Andrew also, upon request.  The very notion that he begins with --that SH invaded Kuwait “without reason” is easily proved false, but the question arises as to whether or not Andrew is open to seeing proof to the contrary about that point or the other issues he raises. When Americans rant and rave so...and other Americans sit by, in denial (or otherwise), and don’t confront such abominable statements it underscores what I continually say about the citizens of this country.  To wit, THEY are “the enemy” not the so-called foreign terrorists. For anyone, at this juncture, to talk about UN resolutions with regard to SH without the faintest trace of irony, to say the least, is very sad.  I call on all readers to self-educate and educate others when you can, but not to waste precious heartbeats on heartbeasts or the unrecoverable.  Love in solidarity, Oxie

  11. Could the Deborah here be the same one who has made trenchant comments elsewhere?  Fact is, the US is miserly in its foreign aid.  It gives less than one-tenth of one percent of GDP in aid to other countries.  That is less than any other industrialized Western democracy.  Finland gives the most, I believe it is four plus percent.  Norway, Scandanavia are in the same range, as are France and Germany.

Moreover, much of the so-called aid the US gives is military aid and given for nefarious ends.  For example, it gives something on the order of $5 billion a year to Israel, a country of 15 million people.  Conversely, it gives $800 million in aid to all of sub-Saharan Africa, an area of 220 million, much needier and therefore deserving, people.  To reiterate, most of the aid to Israel is military aid for nefarious ends.

The umbrella is unfurled.  Here come the reactionary comments of the capitalists telling me ho human destitution is not a lien on their god-given right to be rich.
