Bourgeois sham? Applause for so much that is here. However, to single out just one point that’s important to us all, whether or not one agrees literally w Cockburn re his remarks on the institution, I believe we had better take stock of how much energy is going toward pushing for gay marriage vs. how much effort is being made to undermine other bourgeois shams. This is NOT to denigrate the feelings expressed here. My heart goes out to the writer and to all who he is fighting for, BUT...there’s a huge imbalance re activism that comes from a particular corner and activism that generates the undermining of middle-class (very dangerous)nonsense across the board. Having said that, please note that there’s a very strong case to be made for gay marriage --aside from what the spotlight’s usually on, with justification-- simply for what it would do to lessen violence against gays and lesbians. Let lesbians and gays have their sunshine as they see fit, but encourage them to get with the cross-the-board issues with the greatest passion possible, The Ox
