  1. Beautifully put, Ahmed.  It would appear that what pleases Sharon --in the terms you address at the end of your piece-- is what would unnerve Bush.  Upping the ante on these shores would help immensely.  Short of that, how about the Left addressing the Israeli lobbyists...in a peaceful, but firm way?  How about having the tradtions embraced by Scoop Jackson and Inouye of Hawaii and the whole of what “George Sunderland” (not the person’s real name) calls “Our Vichy Congress” undermined?  How about...at the very least...getting the issue of the degree to which the Israeli government calls the shots behind the scenes on the table?  Short of that, how about discussing at length the degree to which Zionist-academia controls the parameters of debate so that we never get very far in doing away with the bases for Israel being able to commit atrocities?
Loving best, Richard (The Ox) Oxman

  2. Israel doesn’t hold any “political prisoners.” It only holds criminals (e.g., car thieves) and people who have killed or tried to kill Israelis.  So I don’t understand your complaint that Israel should release political prisoners.

The prisoner release included many people who were involved in violent attacks against Israel.  It was not required by the Roadmap.  What WAS required by the Roadmap was for the PA to arrest those attacking Israel, but Abbas had announced he would not even attempt this.  The suicide bombers, snipers, bomb makers, etc., would be free to do as they please.  So it seems that Israel was supporting Abbas even though Abbas was unwilling to comply with the Roadmap or take any positive steps to support Sharon.  Sharon helped Abbas.  What did Abbas do to help Israel?

  3. I’m confused about the response to my comment. To clarify, I was addressing the influence of Zionist lobbyists, NOT political prisoners.  I don’t know why you mentioned Abbas or The Road Map in your response.  Sincerely, Richard Oxman

  4. I’m sorry, I don’t quite follow the comment mechanics.  I was commenting about the article, which I thought was wrong, not on your comment.

All of Palestine’s worst injuries are self inflicted.  If we had had better leadership, we would have had our own state long before.  We could have had our own state in 1947, without war, without exile.  The UN offered us a state much bigger than the puny remnants we’re fighting over now.  We’ve blown opportunity after opportunity.  Every year we are poorer and worse off, while our “leaders” drive around in Mercedes Benzes and ask us to sacrifice.

Abba Eban once said the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.  He was right.

  5. Spoken like a true Zionist in the first, rather than the third person.  Come on Ahmed, what’s your real name?  Richard, didn’t follow your comment, “How about having the traditions embraced by Scoop Jackson and Inouye of Hawaii and the whole of what” etc., etc.  Please elaborate if you have time.

  6. I’m confused and apologize if necessary.  The Ahmed of the comments sounds different from that of the author of this article.  Am I wrong? (insert red face here)

  7. War will cease when it is no longer profitable.
War will cease when it is no longer prophetable.

  8. The “Ahmed” of the above comment is certainly different from the author [Ahmed Bouzid] of the article.

  9. To One and All:  Glad readers are on top of the diff b the two Ahmeds.  For anyone to suggest that all the ills of Palestinians are a function of their worst leadership is the Middle East equivalent of stating that rabbis during WWII Germany were responsible for the gas chambers or that Gypsy leaders at that time led their people to death.  It’s truly disgusting, the comment.  For Tracy, Scoop Jackson and the Hawaiian dude are both examples of people in Congress kowtowing to the Zionist influence, advocating for Israel’s interests at the expense of the Palestinians.  Sweet days for all, Oxie of the Oxen

  10. Indeed, insert another red face here.  This has been gnawing at me since the time of my last post, and I was right the first time.  The Ahmed of the comments is certainly different than that of the author of this article.  Insert the red face here at me not trusting my first instinct.  As to those comments and their surreptitious offering, I don’t think they’re worth responding to.

  11. I’m sorry, Ahmed is a common name.  I am not the same one as the one who wrote the article.

I live in Tennessee.  I own gas stations.  My parents moved here from what is now Beit Tikva, Israel, in 1947.  I tried to open a gas station after Oslo accords, but the bribes were too high.  I paid everyone, but still no permits.  They said I am a rich American and I must still pay more.

The Israelis are not saints.  Did I say they were?  Am I a Zionist because I criticize the PA?  Does all blame lie on one side?  The PA are thieves!

The Israelis, good or bad, are not going away, and the Palestinians must accept this.  The Israelis have nowhere else to go, and they cannot be removed by violence.  The leadership does not tell the people they must settle, that the Israelis cannot be evicted.  So groups like Hamas make life worse, because they raise unreasonable expectations.  They prevent peace.

We have tried war for more than 60 years.  Israel grows and thrives.  It is time for a change in tactics, and the current leadership cannot provide it.
