I just want to post some comments on Hunter S. Thompson’s ("HST") suicide.
So HST decided to put the business end of a loaded revolver into his mouth and snack on some ammunition. I for one don’t think this was a heroic act. To me there was nothing glamorous, romantic, or defiant about it. I don’t think it’s toastworthy, noteworthy, or manly. You’ll not find me pouring whiskey on a grave. Now or ever. It is sad that as an author, HST influenced the corruption of my earlier adult years with his perpetual adolesence. I realize I am responsible for my own mistakes, but those who romanticise the Hemingway, Thompson, Cobain, Morrison, Hendrix, Cassidy, Kerouac, or any other sad sack as an icon for doing what bums do everyday are pathetic fools.
I’ve spent many a day smoking, drinking and last call philosophizing. It’s a frustrating roundabout creating as much pain as it masks. It seems to me that the one’s who want life the most are the ones who are the most disappointed. I don’t pretend to have the answer, but I smell a problem. We praise those who put words on that which we cannot. So I guess it’s time to praise HST and bury him.
I do hope they shoot his remains out of a cannon though. That part is pretty funny.
