  1. Alam begins his interview with this question…
    “Alam: The decimation of Fallujah did not either curb or destroy the insurgency. Instead insurgents continue to dominate Iraq’s geographical center, threatening U.S. supply lines and striking at will. Meanwhile, U.S.-trained Iraqi forces seem prone to falling apart, as recently evidenced in Mosul. Does this mean U.S. war planners’ hopes for finding an “exit strategy” are unfounded?”

    I haven’t time to read the rest of the interview and I’ve read some of Alam’s comments in the past and generally agree with his positions.  However one of the things that must be clear is that the language and meaning of words should never be conceeded.  The Iraqi citizens fighting the U.S. invader are members of a resistance and are not insurgents as the people currently running Iraq are illegitimate and are international war criminals.  We all should be refering to those fighting the U.S. and her surrogates as THE RESISTANCE

  2. Wilson...the point that you make is an important one. The mis-use of the word “insurgent” is a subtle form of brain washing. Also the misuse of the term “collateral damage”. The Pentagon has such influence over the Press that the Press now uses the language of the Pentagon. I can’t tell you how many times I have contacted the media on this subject. You are correct when you say that the correct word is “resistance”.  I usually call them “freedom fighters” or “patriots”.

There is a saying in Zen which states, “the finger pointing at the moon is not the moon.” Which is to say that the lables which we create to describe someone or something, are not the person or thing itself… but only our experiences of them.  Friend or foe, insurgent or resister… may tell more about us (i.e. how we feel about someone) than who somone really is.
